If you have recently updated your older Xiaomi device to the latest software and noticed the screen around the top cutout fading after prolonged use, do not panic. What might initially look like a frustrating display bug is actually a carefully designed, proactive measure by Xiaomi to protect your hardware.
Recent reports circulating on social media regarding a supposed UI glitch in the new system have been officially clarified. According to tech blogger @缪特mt, this visual shift is an intentional “anti-burn-in” algorithm specifically implemented for Xiaomi HyperOS 3.
How the Anti-Burn-In Algorithm Works
With the official rollout of Xiaomi HyperOS 3, the company introduced “Hyper Island”—a dynamic interface feature that optimizes the industry standard for top-screen cutouts. It features custom ultra-narrow typography and allows for the simultaneous display and flexible switching of up to three background tasks (like timers, recorders, or trip information) without interfering with each other.
Because the Hyper Island constantly displays static pixels in the exact same location at the top of the screen, older OLED panels are highly susceptible to image retention, commonly known as “burn-in.” To combat this, the software actively monitors the aging of older screens. When a static Hyper Island element is displayed for an extended period, the anti-burn-in algorithm subtly fades the graphics. This micro-shifting and fading prevent the OLED pixels from degrading unevenly, thus saving the display from permanent hardware damage.
When asked if newer generation phones would feature this fading algorithm, it was clarified that new phones feature modern display technologies that natively resist burn-in, meaning they “won’t need it for now.”
How This Improves the System Experience
By acknowledging the physical limitations of aging hardware, Xiaomi has delivered a software-level solution that extends the lifespan of older smartphones. Users get to enjoy the modern, multitasking benefits of the Hyper Island—such as pulling down the small window for quick interactions or dragging and dropping trip information—without the anxiety of ruining their displays. It trades a minor, temporary visual fade for long-term hardware preservation.

My Poco X6 Pro 5G does not have Hyper OS3 yet 😞😔
when hyper os3
poco x6 pro 5g 😭😭😭
just click about phone then xiaomi hyperos to download the update
when me got hyperOS 3.1 and stack resent app in redmi 13
For the global version of Poco X6 Pro, the update to 3.0.4.0 has already been released.
As for the display burn-in, I’ve been using the app for work for 2-3 years, and one of the menu words and several icons are clearly visible at the top of the screen. It’s quite annoying.
