New Xiaomi Smart Privacy Display warns you when someone looks at your screen

Xiaomi has showcased its upcoming Smart Privacy Display feature on a Global ROM device, likely an imminent flagship model. The feature aims to protect sensitive on-screen content from prying eyes by limiting visibility from side angles using pixel-level control and incorporating gaze detection technology.

How Smart Privacy Display Works

The new privacy mode offers three activation options. First, a device-wide mode applies privacy protection across the entire phone but disables gaze detection to save battery life. Second, users can enable privacy per app, selecting specific apps like Gallery, Gmail, Contacts, Notes, SMS, or Phone. This mode combines reduced side visibility with gaze detection that warns the user if someone nearby is looking at the screen. Third, notifications from supported apps can receive partial privacy treatment to blur content visible from side angles.

Region-Specific Availability and Features

While this preview was recorded on a Global ROM, certain related options such as “Page Privacy Display” and Xiaomi Hyper XiaoAi groups currently appear limited to China ROM builds. It suggests that Xiaomi may initially test or restrict parts of the feature within the Chinese market before expanding availability globally.

Implications for Privacy and User Experience

Smart Privacy Display could enhance phone security in public environments by preventing others from easily reading sensitive information from side views. The addition of gaze detection adds an alert layer to inform users when someone peers at their display, although this function is omitted in the device-wide mode to reduce power consumption.

This feature aligns with growing privacy demands among smartphone users but remains to be officially confirmed or detailed by Xiaomi. The exact flagship model that will first support this feature has not been disclosed.

Further Developments and Monitoring

Users interested in this feature can expect more updates as Xiaomi rolls out HyperOS updates and new device launches. The MemeOS Enhancer app on Google Play may help check the availability of such HyperOS features and updates as they become public.
