Xiaomi 17 Max officially announced with 6.9-inch flat display and massive 8000mAh battery

Xiaomi has officially confirmed the launch of the all-new Xiaomi 17 Max, a completely new member of the Xiaomi 17 series that aims to redefine the concept of a “large-screen standard flagship.” The device is scheduled to debut later this month in China and is already generating major discussion due to its unusual positioning.

Interestingly, despite Xiaomi marketing the phone as a brand-new Max flagship, the design language shown in official teasers looks extremely close to the existing Xiaomi 15 series rather than introducing a radically refreshed Xiaomi 17-series appearance. The rear camera layout, flat frame structure, and overall silhouette strongly resemble the current Xiaomi 15 design philosophy instead of showcasing a new-generation visual identity.

Xiaomi 17 Max design looks surprisingly similar to Xiaomi 15

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the Xiaomi 17 Max is its appearance. Based on the official renders and teaser materials, Xiaomi appears to be heavily reusing the Xiaomi 15 industrial design.

The similarities include:

  • Rounded-square Leica camera module placement
  • Flat aluminum frame structure
  • Flat rear panel styling
  • Minimalistic side profile
  • Overall proportions and visual balance

For many Xiaomi fans, this is unexpected because flagship generation transitions usually introduce at least moderate visual evolution. Instead, the Xiaomi 17 Max currently feels more like a “large-screen Xiaomi 15 Ultra-lite aesthetic” rather than a distinctly futuristic Xiaomi 17-series redesign.

The resemblance becomes even more noticeable when comparing the Xiaomi 17 Max teaser images directly with existing Xiaomi 15 hardware photos. The final two comparison images especially highlight how closely aligned the camera island design and frame geometry are.

Xiaomi says the 17 Max is a “full Max upgrade”

According to Xiaomi executive Lu Weibing, the company spent five generations refining compact flagship phones from the Xiaomi 12 through Xiaomi 17, but users continuously requested a larger-screen version of the standard flagship experience.

Xiaomi describes the new Xiaomi 17 Max as a comprehensive upgrade over the regular Xiaomi 17, promising improvements in:

  • Imaging
  • Battery life
  • Screen quality
  • Sustained performance
  • Cooling capabilities

The company specifically emphasized that the device will deliver the “strongest battery life in Xiaomi history.”

Expected specifications

Based on leaks compiled from Chinese sources, the Xiaomi 17 Max is expected to feature:

  • 6.9-inch 1.5K ultra-narrow bezel flat display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite successor platform
  • 200MP primary camera
  • 50MP telephoto macro camera
  • Leica imaging system
  • 8000mAh battery
  • 3D ultrasonic fingerprint scanner
  • Symmetrical dual speakers
  • Full-level water resistance

The device is also rumored to feature significantly upgraded thermal management compared to Xiaomi’s smaller flagship phones.

Three colors confirmed

Xiaomi has already showcased three official colors for the Xiaomi 17 Max:

  • Black
  • Blue
  • White

The black version appears to use a texture similar to the dragon-scale carbon fiber finish previously seen on the Xiaomi 15S Pro.

Price may surprise users

Reports from Chinese insiders suggest the Xiaomi 17 Max could launch starting at approximately 5,199 yuan, which converts to around $720. Since the phone is currently confirmed only for China, pricing and will be exlusive for China.

This pricing discussion is especially important because Xiaomi executives recently warned that rising memory and storage costs are pushing flagship smartphone prices significantly higher across the entire industry.

Why Xiaomi may have reused the Xiaomi 15 design

There are several possible reasons why Xiaomi kept a Xiaomi 15-like appearance for the Xiaomi 17 Max instead of introducing a fully refreshed design:

  1. Manufacturing optimization — reusing existing tooling lowers production costs.
  2. Brand consistency — Xiaomi may want a recognizable flagship identity similar to Apple’s iterative design strategy.
  3. Thermal and battery priorities — engineering focus may have shifted toward cooling and battery capacity rather than aesthetics.
  4. Internal positioning — Xiaomi could reserve a more aggressive redesign for future Ultra or Xiaomi 18 models.

Still, for a device marketed as a major new “Max” flagship category, the similarity to Xiaomi 15 is difficult to ignore.

The Xiaomi 17 Max now appears to be positioned less as a visual revolution and more as a specification-focused powerhouse targeting users who want massive battery life, a large flat display, and flagship performance without moving to an Ultra model.
