At the 2026 Mobile Network Conference, Qualcomm President and CEO Cristiano Amon stated that 6G technology is designed from the start to be AI-native. This means artificial intelligence will be integrated directly into the wireless network itself.

AI Integrated into Network for Smarter Performance
Amon explained that 6G will enable continuous exchange of context information between devices, edge systems, and the cloud through network connectivity. AI will be embedded in wireless communication systems to not only estimate but also predict changes in signal quality. This aims to maintain strong performance even when signal strength is low.
Further, computing power will be spread throughout the network—from base stations to the network edge and data centers. AI tasks like computing and inference will be distributed across these nodes, improving efficiency and responsiveness.
Progress on 6G Prototypes and Testing
This September, Qualcomm and China Mobile completed the world’s first interoperability test of U6G band base station prototypes and 6G terminal prototypes. The tests followed the latest 3GPP standards, marking a key move from research to system validation.
Qualcomm showcased its global first 6G terminal prototype—compliant with the newest 3GPP specifications—at the Ninth China International Import Expo in November. The physical prototype was publicly displayed outside the laboratory for the first time and has been used in joint 6G testing with China Mobile and ZTE.
Industry Outlook and Strategic Implications
Durga Malladi, Qualcomm’s Executive Vice President in charge of edge solutions and data center business, highlighted at Qualcomm’s August 6G Analyst and Media Day that the boundaries between communications, AI, and computing are rapidly merging as the industry pivots to 6G.
Unlike 5G, which focused mainly on mobile broadband, 6G aims for AI-native integration, pervasive sensing, and coordinated computing across the entire ecosystem. This will reshape device categories, network architecture, and industry ecosystems.
Malladi noted that 6G will give rise to new types of devices called “intelligent AI agents,” a trend already emerging in China.
The industry is moving toward a commercial rollout around 2029, driven by major players like Qualcomm and Chinese partners who continue advancing AI-native networks and new wireless capabilities.
Users interested in tracking developments can monitor Qualcomm’s 6G progress through official conference reports and partner announcements.
Feature and update availability reflect current research and prototype stages, with broad commercial deployment expected near 2029.
