Qualcomm has postponed the mass production of its next-generation 2nm mobile platform chip with Samsung until 2027. According to South Korean media outlet The Bell, the delay stems from unresolved price negotiations, despite the resolution of most technical challenges between the two companies.
Qualcomm had planned to use Samsung’s advanced 2nm process to compete with Apple’s upcoming A20 series chips. While Qualcomm is reportedly satisfied with Samsung’s 2nm technology performance, it has requested a further reduction in manufacturing costs. Samsung has so far declined to lower prices, citing the limited order volume currently discussed, which does not justify a significant discount.
This marks a departure from Qualcomm’s previous collaboration with Samsung on the 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chips, where yield problems led Qualcomm to shift part of production to TSMC’s 3nm process. However, Business Korea has reported that Samsung’s 2nm yield rates now exceed 70%, signaling improved manufacturing stability compared to past experience.
The pricing stalemate is now the main obstacle to Qualcomm’s 2nm chip rollout. Without a timely agreement, Qualcomm’s entry with 2nm flagship silicon could be delayed, potentially impacting the chip supply dynamics in the 2027 premium smartphone segment.
Users and industry watchers aiming to track updates on Qualcomm’s 2nm chips can monitor related development news through Xiaomi update resources but should expect no firm release timelines until pricing is resolved.
