Xiaomi’s New Door Sensor 3 Tracks Opening Stats

Xiaomi has introduced the Door and Window Sensor 3 on its crowdfunding platform, priced at 44 yuan (about $6). The campaign runs until October 19 at 10 AM. This new sensor focuses on long battery life and timely detection of open and close states to enhance smart home security and automation.

Improved Sensor Technology and Battery Life

The Door and Window Sensor 3 upgrades from the previous Hall sensor to a tunneling magnetoresistive (TMR) sensor. Xiaomi claims the new sensor offers faster response times and lower power consumption. It uses a CR2032 button battery with an expected life of up to three years, a significant increase from the one-year battery life of the second generation device.

Users will receive low battery alerts via the Mi Home app when power runs low, helping to maintain consistent sensor performance without unexpected downtime.

Enhanced Monitoring Features

The sensor supports real-time open/close status viewing, sensing records, daily open/close count, and duration statistics. While the Door and Window Sensor 2 included a light sensor, the third generation emphasizes extended battery life and detailed behavior tracking instead.

Smart Home Integration and Usage

To monitor the sensor remotely through the Mi Home app, it requires connection to a device with Bluetooth Mesh gateway functionality. The app sends notifications on abnormal status changes, enabling timely alerts for safety and security.

Using Xiaomi’s Surge Smart Connect platform, the sensor can interact with other devices like smart switches, air conditioner companions, water leak detectors, and temperature/humidity meters. Users can create automation scenarios such as turning on lights when doors open, switching off the air conditioner when windows are opened, or receiving reminders to close windows during rain or high humidity conditions. These automation settings must be configured in advance within the Mi Home app, and connected devices must be purchased separately.

Compact, Easy-to-Install Design

The sensor features a slim, small form factor suitable for narrow spaces such as doors, windows, drawers, and storage boxes. Installation guidance is printed on the device to ensure proper alignment between the sensor and magnet, reducing false readings caused by incorrect installation.
