Xiaomi has introduced the Xiaomi Door and Window Sensor 3, which will be available for crowdfunding starting October 12 at 10:00 AM in China. The crowdfunding price is 44 yuan (about $6), with a suggested retail price of 49 yuan (about $7).
Upgraded Sensor and Extended Battery
The new sensor replaces the traditional Hall sensor used in the previous generation with a tunnel magnetoresistance sensor. Xiaomi claims this upgrade offers faster response times and lower power consumption. The sensor uses a CR2032 button battery designed to last up to three years under typical use, a significant increase over the one-year battery life of the Xiaomi Door and Window Sensor 2.
Functional Improvements
The Xiaomi Door and Window Sensor 3 supports monitoring of the opening and closing status for doors, drawers, cabinet doors, and other openings. It tracks real-time status, records opening events, counts daily opening times, and measures how long items stay open or closed. The previous generation also included a light sensor, which is absent in the new model. Instead, the focus is on long battery life and detailed opening and closing behavior tracking.
Smart Home Integration
To use the sensor remotely via the Mi Home app, users need a device that supports Bluetooth Mesh as a gateway. The app can then display real-time open/close states and event histories for monitored items. It also sends notifications if an abnormal status is detected.
The sensor can work with Xiaomi’s broader smart ecosystem through the Surge Intelligent Connect platform. This enables automation such as turning on lights when a door opens, switching off air conditioners when windows open, and sending reminders to close windows during rain or high humidity. These automation features require manual setup in the Mi Home app, and the linked smart devices must be purchased separately. Xiaomi notes that some features depend on real-world conditions.
Design Details
The sensor has a compact and slim design suitable for narrow spaces like door frames, drawers, cabinets, and storage boxes. It features installation direction guidance printed on the device to help ensure correct alignment between the main unit and the magnet, reducing the chance of false triggers due to incorrect installation.
