Xiaomi 18 Ultra Development Reportedly Stopped

A new leak suggests that Xiaomi may have stopped or paused development of the Xiaomi 18 Ultra, creating one of the biggest questions around Xiaomi’s next-generation flagship roadmap. The claim is especially important because earlier leaks had pointed to a major camera-focused upgrade for the device, including a 200MP LOFIC telephoto camera, continuous optical zoom, and ultra-close macro capability. For now, Xiaomi has not officially confirmed the cancellation, so this should be treated as an industry leak rather than a final product decision.

Why This Matters

The Xiaomi Ultra series has traditionally represented the company’s most aggressive mobile imaging strategy. Models like the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, Xiaomi 15 Ultra, and Xiaomi 17 Ultra pushed large sensors, Leica imaging, advanced telephoto hardware, and professional photography accessories.

However, the latest claim suggests Xiaomi may no longer have a traditionally defined Ultra model planned for the Xiaomi 18 generation. This would be a major change because previous leaks described the Xiaomi 18 Ultra as a camera-first flagship with very ambitious hardware.

Earlier information claimed that the Xiaomi 18 Ultra could feature:

  • 200MP telephoto camera
  • 1/1.28-inch telephoto sensor
  • LOFIC technology
  • Continuous optical zoom
  • 15cm ultra-close macro
  • 6.9-inch display
  • New high-quality ultrawide sensor
  • Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro likely
  • Expected global price above $1,200–$1,300 USD

These specifications suggested that Xiaomi was preparing one of its most advanced camera phones ever. The possible halt now creates a very different picture: Xiaomi may be reconsidering whether an expensive Ultra imaging flagship still makes commercial sense in the current smartphone market.

Affected Devices / Software Versions

This leak is related to hardware development, not HyperOS software.

Possibly stopped product:

  • Xiaomi 18 Ultra

Related Xiaomi 18 series models still appearing in leaks:

  • Xiaomi 18
  • Xiaomi 18 Pro
  • Xiaomi 18 Pro Max

Recent reports have already pointed to a large-screen Xiaomi 18 Pro Max model with a 6.9-inch display and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro-class chipset, which may indicate that Xiaomi could shift its highest-end strategy from “Ultra” branding toward a Pro Max-style flagship instead.

How This Could Impact Xiaomi’s Camera Strategy

If the Xiaomi 18 Ultra is truly stopped, it would not simply mean one model was canceled. It could signal a broader slowdown in the smartphone camera arms race.

For years, brands competed through larger sensors, more advanced periscope lenses, higher zoom ranges, Leica / ZEISS / Hasselblad partnerships, and increasingly complex image pipelines. But these upgrades also increase cost, thickness, weight, and production complexity.

The Xiaomi 18 Ultra was expected to continue this race with a 200MP LOFIC telephoto sensor and advanced optical zoom. If Xiaomi has stepped back from that plan, it may suggest the company believes the market is reaching a practical limit where users care more about balanced flagship features than extreme camera hardware.

That does not mean Xiaomi is abandoning imaging. More likely, Xiaomi may move premium camera features into a different model, such as the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max, while avoiding a separate Ultra model that would be more expensive and more niche.
