Xiaomi may have canceled its magnetic lens system for Xiaomi 18 series

Xiaomi’s ambitious magnetic accessory ecosystem may be facing a major setback. According to a new statement from well-known Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station (DCS), Xiaomi’s magnetic camera lens project, which was previously expected to launch this year, appears to have been suspended internally. The company had reportedly been testing native PIN-based magnetic accessories including detachable camera lenses, magnetic cooling fans, and secondary display modules. However, the most anticipated feature, magnetic lenses and snap-on teleconverters, may no longer be moving forward for now.

Xiaomi’s magnetic camera ecosystem may be delayed indefinitely

The latest information comes directly from Digital Chat Station’s interaction on Chinese social media. DCS stated that Xiaomi had originally scheduled the magnetic lens project for this year, but the initiative has now been “suspended.” This matches earlier rumors suggesting Xiaomi was experimenting with advanced modular photography accessories for future flagship devices.

According to previous leaks, Xiaomi was actively testing:

  • Magnetic detachable camera lenses
  • Snap-on teleconverter systems
  • Magnetic cooling fans
  • Magnetic secondary displays

However, the insider specifically noted:

“Magnetic lenses and snap-on teleconverters tested but not passed at this time.”

This strongly suggests Xiaomi failed to achieve the reliability, image quality, durability, or user experience standards required for commercial release.

MIX Fold 5 and Xiaomi 18 series were previously linked to this feature

Multiple earlier reports claimed Xiaomi planned to introduce the magnetic lens ecosystem alongside future premium devices such as:

  • Xiaomi MIX Fold 5 / Xiaomi 17 Fold
  • Xiaomi 18 series

The technology was expected to become part of Xiaomi’s broader premium photography strategy, potentially competing with professional mobile camera accessories and modular ecosystem products from rival brands.

Some leaks even suggested Xiaomi was developing a native magnetic PIN connector system integrated directly into the device chassis. This would have allowed accessories to communicate with the phone with lower latency and more stable power delivery compared to standard wireless magnetic systems.

Even if the magnetic lens ecosystem has been paused, Xiaomi remains one of the smartphone industry’s most aggressive hardware innovators. The company continues exploring foldables, XR devices, AI-powered software experiences, advanced imaging systems, and smart ecosystem accessories.
