REDMI K90 surpasses 2 million activations as Xiaomi’s mid-size strategy wins big

Xiaomi has reportedly achieved a major success with the REDMI K90, as new reports from Chinese sources claim the smartphone has now surpassed 2 million activated units. According to well-known Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station, the REDMI K90’s activation numbers are roughly equal to the combined sales of two competing devices in the same price segment.

The latest sales milestone suggests Xiaomi’s new strategy focused on “golden mid-size” smartphones is resonating strongly with consumers in China. While many Android brands continue prioritizing extremely large displays and gaming-focused designs, the REDMI K90 appears to have found success by balancing performance, usability, battery life, and premium build quality.

REDMI K90 becomes one of Xiaomi’s biggest hits

According to the latest Weibo discussion, the REDMI K90 has significantly outperformed expectations in the Chinese market.

Digital Chat Station stated:

“Compared to large-screen performance phones, mid-screen phones with better build quality and more versatile features are more popular.”

The tipster also predicted that Xiaomi will continue this dual-size strategy with the upcoming REDMI K100 series, combining:

  • Mid-size balanced flagship models
  • Large-screen performance-focused models

Additional comments revealed more details about Xiaomi’s internal positioning strategy for the K-series lineup.

According to the leak:

  • REDMI K standard models focus on balanced mid-size flagship experiences
  • REDMI K Max models focus on raw gaming and performance
  • REDMI K Pro Max models target multimedia and entertainment users

This creates a much clearer separation between product categories than previous REDMI generations.

REDMI K90 specifications helped drive sales

For reference, the REDMI K90 launched with several highly competitive flagship-level specifications despite its aggressive pricing.

Key specifications include:

  • 6.59-inch “golden mid-size” display
  • Simplified horizontal matrix camera design
  • Unified color-coated Deco styling
  • Snapdragon 8 Elite processor
  • Massive 7100mAh battery
  • 100W wired charging
  • 22.5W reverse charging
  • Full support for 100W PPS universal charging protocol

The device launched in China starting at approximately $360 USD (converted from 2,599 yuan).

The combination of flagship performance, compact usability, huge battery capacity, and premium charging support appears to have become the main reason behind the phone’s rapid growth.

K90 Pro Max sales reportedly weaker

The same leak also clarified that the higher-end K90 Pro Max models are performing more moderately in comparison.

According to Digital Chat Station, the K90PM lineup started around the 4,000 yuan price segment (roughly $555 USD), making it less accessible to mainstream consumers.

Meanwhile, the standard REDMI K90 directly competed against multiple large-screen rivals in the same pricing category and reportedly matched the combined sales of both competing products.

Sun Cun also reacted publicly to the milestone on Weibo, indirectly confirming the strong market performance.
