Xiaomi 17T series may finally launch in China after years of global exclusivity

Xiaomi has officially confirmed that the Xiaomi 17T series will launch globally on May 28, 2026. The announcement marks one of the biggest upgrades in the history of the T-series lineup, but another detail is attracting even more attention. According to multiple Chinese sources, Xiaomi is also preparing China-exclusive variants of the Xiaomi 17T and Xiaomi 17T Pro. If true, this would be the first time in years that Xiaomi’s T-series phones officially enter the Chinese market. Interestingly, XimiTime previously reported months ago that Xiaomi was internally testing a China launch strategy for the 17T lineup.

Xiaomi may change its T-series strategy

The Xiaomi T series has historically been focused entirely on global markets. Previous devices such as the Xiaomi 12T Pro and Xiaomi 15T Pro were never officially sold in China because the T lineup traditionally targeted Europe, Southeast Asia, and other overseas regions.

However, this year appears different. Chinese leakster “Panda is Bald” claims Xiaomi plans to release localized “replica” variants of the Xiaomi 17T series in China with slightly modified hardware specifications. While the term “replica” sounds unusual when translated directly from Chinese, it actually refers to devices that maintain the same overall design and positioning while receiving region-specific hardware adjustments.

This strategy could allow Xiaomi to test whether premium mid-range flagship devices like the T series can succeed in the highly competitive Chinese market.

Interestingly, Xiaomi almost attempted something similar years ago with the Xiaomi 11T (codename: agate). Internal plans reportedly existed for a China launch, but Xiaomi canceled the project at the last moment before release.

Xiaomi 17T specifications leaked

The standard Xiaomi 17T is expected to feature a balanced flagship-level experience focused on battery life and camera performance.

Xiaomi 17T expected specifications

  • 6.59-inch 1.5K 120Hz OLED flat display
  • MediaTek Dimensity 8500 Ultra processor
  • 32MP front camera
  • 50MP Light Hunter 800 main camera
  • 12MP ultra-wide camera
  • 50MP 5x telephoto camera
  • Leica camera system
  • 6500mAh battery
  • 67W wired charging

The leaked renders also show Xiaomi continuing its minimalist Leica-inspired camera design language with a refined square camera module.

Xiaomi 17T Pro expected specifications

  • 6.83-inch 1.5K 144Hz OLED flat display
  • MediaTek Dimensity 9500 processor
  • 32MP front camera
  • 50MP Light Hunter 950 main camera
  • 12MP ultra-wide camera
  • 50MP 5x telephoto camera
  • Leica camera optics
  • 7000mAh battery
  • 100W wired charging
  • 50W wireless charging

The combination of a massive 7000mAh battery and flagship charging speeds could become one of the strongest selling points of the Xiaomi 17T Pro globally.

Why China launch matters for Xiaomi

A China release would represent a major strategic shift for Xiaomi. The company already dominates multiple price segments in overseas markets, but China remains one of the most difficult smartphone markets in the world due to competition from Huawei, vivo, OPPO, and Honor.

Launching the Xiaomi 17T series in China could help Xiaomi fill the gap between its standard numbered flagship series and REDMI performance-focused devices. It may also indicate Xiaomi wants to unify its global and domestic product strategies more aggressively starting in 2026.

At the moment, Xiaomi has only officially confirmed the global launch event scheduled for May 28. The Chinese variants have not yet been officially announced.
